Codes and Conventions of Pop

Music Video: Jessie J- Domino Genre: Pop
Music Video: Katy Perry- California Gurls Genre: Pop

Conventions: Mise en scene
Setting- Very bright and colourful.. As you can see from the images below that very colourful backdrops are showed aswell as bright clothing and props. The colour palette sets the cheerful mood, creating a warm atmosphere.
Lighting- Artificial lighting which gives the artist an effective/ magical look, highlighting that its aimed at a young audience.

Conventions: Camera shots
Lots of extreme close ups emphasing the costume of the artist and the upbeat and cheerful emotions, a key convention of the pop genre.  The print screen below is a good example, clearly showing the artists , make up and facial expression.

Long shots are also used in this music video, and used frequently in the genre of pop showing the artist appeals to its audience in a sexual form. The image below is a good example because you can see the artist head to toe, showing what shes wearing, how shes dancing etc. The music video with Katy Perry shows a key convention of pop genre with a long shot of the artist dancing with other dancers, this happens often with pop music videos.

Conventions: Editing
Music videos within the genre of pop usually have a lot of editing in them, in the Katy Perry music video lots of fantasy/ fairytale backdrops and mise en scene are used which are animated. In the Jessie J music video jump cuts and jerky transitions are used creating a visual effect.

New song for ISTOP motion

Our new song we have decided to choose is 'Lego House' by Ed Sheeran. We thought this song would work well using the lego men and pieces, because its what it says. With the change of ideas and plans we needed to think of a song that would be easy and not too challenging with the lego, we thought this song would be perfect.

New Story Board and Idea..

After a week of preparing for our original idea using playdough and music 'Baby Got Back' we decided that it was too challenging, we found it very hard to stand the playdough and took a lot of time to take each shot without the playdough falling apart. After an hour of deliberating we decided to change our idea completly! We thought that using lego pieces would be a better idea and would make it easier to film as the lego could stand properly unlike the playdough we used before. The image above shows our new storyboard, we decided to use the music 'Lego House' by Ed Sheeran and simply build a lego house with the lego men building.

Above is our new video shoot shot list for our new music video. It has the same shot throughout, 'long shot'. The reason for this is because of the limited time we had left and we wanted to make it as great as we could with the time we had, we thought using the same shot would make the process easier as each shot we took we had to be careful how we postioned the lego, moving the camera would have made this even harder for us.

David Banner Analysis

We decided to analysis David Banners video 'Play' as it is the same Genre as our chosen Music Video 'Baby Got Back' which is Dirty rap.
The two videos are very different but the writing that comes up on the screen is the same.

There are many camera techniques used in the Play video, but at the beginning it is just words that fill up the screen. However there is then many close ups, medium shots and long shots. For example you can see from our 9 shots above that is there is a close up of a girl exercising and an extreme close up on David Banner in the 6th shot. The last shot is a pan shot with David himself instructing the girls to exercise. The rest of the video consists of simular shots.

The set in the background is always made of bright block colours for example blue green, orange and yellow backgrounds above. The costumes are very minimal i.e colourful sports wear and David is wearing an all white tracksuit, the colours used are very eye catching so the audience is drawn to the video. The few props that are used in this video are a newspaper held by David Banner, the treadmills the girls run on, the terbotrainers for cycling and the weights.

The only editing techniques we could see was the cuts and wipes inbetween shots and adding the writing at the beginning.

We will use  the video for this song to help us on our one minute animation.

Chosen Song for ISTOP Motion

We wanted to use a humorous song for our animation project. We also wanted it to be an old classic song instead of a typical one that is already in the charts, so we have decided to go with "Baby got back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot.

This song is a comedy hip hop/ dirty rap.
